The Novel Tea book club has been brewing up lively discussions at Artworks for years. We sip on ideas, savor stories, and debate the best characters (and maybe even the worst!).

The Novel Tea book club has met monthly for nearly as long as Artworks has existed. Typically, the club discusses a novel, but occasionally, a memoir or non-fiction book is chosen. Once a year, a classic novel is selected (with a flexible definition of "classic"). Every two years, the club focuses on the "Great Michigan Read."

There are no quizzes, and you don't have to finish the book to participate in the discussion. All backgrounds and perspectives are welcome. You don't have to be an Artworks member (though membership is encouraged!), and you don't have to like the book. Simply maintain civil speech and respect diverse opinions. Attendance is flexible; you can join as often as you like.

If you've been curious about book clubs, Novel Tea is a welcoming and engaging experience.

Current Selection:

  • Book: James by Percival Everett, the 2024 National Book Award winner for fiction. This novel reimagines the story of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim.

Reading Huckleberry Finn beforehand is not required to enjoy James and participate in the discussion.

Consider celebrating Black History Month by reading James and joining the conversation at Artworks!

Find the current and upcoming book selections on the Artworks website under "Programs" > "Novel Tea."
